The Maritime Museum of BC has been in existence since 1955. During this time, volunteers have played a crucial and central role in the daily operation of the museum. Volunteers are employed in every department of the museum, engaged in tasks that range from the operational, to the highly specialized, such as research and model making. Our volunteers represent a cross section of society and range in age from student to retirees. The current volunteer to staff ratio is approximately 10 to 1.
The largest contingent of our volunteers works with the public everyday and is the public face of the museum. They handle admissions, retail sales, tours, and a host of other duties. Behind the scenes, volunteers assist in program development and delivery, artifact cataloguing and refurbishing, administration assistance, maintenance and much more.
The museum also has a library containing over 4000 volumes, many that hold historic import and are irreplaceable. The library is manned entirely by research volunteers.
As well, volunteers play a role in the in the decision-making and future direction of the museum by sitting on our Board of Directors. Directors may be nominated from the general membership and are voted in at the Annual General Meeting.
Currently we engage fifty regular volunteers. For special events and fundraisers, the numbers can easily double. It is through the efforts and enthusiasm of our volunteers that the Museum continues to run smoothly, providing a repository for our maritime heritage and offering a first class product to the public.
Please feel free to download our volunteer application form. You can email the completed form to tsemeniuk@mmbc.bc.ca, mail it to the museum or just bring it on by.
