Found in the heart of Bastion Square, the Maritime Museum of BC is in a beautiful heritage building. We have several rooms available to rent in the building including our restored 1889 Victorian Courtroom. Our unique and intimate atmosphere is sure to make your next event especially memorable with meeting and event spaces that can be configured to accommodate a wide range of groups–from small meetings to large celebrations. The Museum is conveniently located in the downtown core of Victoria, BC and is minutes away from most major hotels.
Our Meeting Spaces
First Floor Gallery and Mezzanine
The first floor gallery is a large gallery space measures 4,890 square feet, and is ideal for a cocktail style mixer or reception. The elevated children’s activity deck serves as a natural platform for speeches or a small stage for musicians. This beautiful permanent gallery is sure to keep your guests entertained with fascinating artifacts on topics such as exploration, deep sea diving, whaling and the Hudson’s Bay Company. This space can accommodate up to 225 people in a cocktail setting.
A beautiful intimate space with three large arches, the Mezzanine was the original entrance before Francis Rattenbury renovated the building. This temporary exhibit space is more flexible with room for sit-down receptions or stand-up mixers and measures 1,390 square feet. The Mezzanine incorporates a second room off of the main room which is perfect for buffet style dining or a dance floor. The Mezzanine can accommodate up to 40 people seated and 75 people in a cocktail setting.
A large space perfect for wedding ceremonies, performing arts productions, lectures or meetings, the Vice-Admiralty Courtroom is an impressive room measuring 1,292 square feet. A unique space in Victoria, your event will stand apart with this selection of venue. Depending on the event, capacity for this room fluctuates between 90 and 140 people seated with some seating on the balcony overlooking the main floor of the courtroom.
Courtroom and Boardroom
Add the boardroom to your rental of the courtroom for an additional 300 square feet of space or a space to get ready during your event. This charming room, which features our special collection, allows for access to the courtroom through a side door or through the main hallway and has a large table in the centre. This room has capacity for approximately 20 people or 15 people seated.
This unique meeting space holds our special collection and some smaller model boats with large beautiful windows that look down into Bastion Square. Hold your meeting for up to 15 people seated or 20 people standing in a memorable place surrounded by history. This 300 square foot room includes access to a phone, whiteboard, and a large table.
For larger events, take advantage of all the Museum has to offer. With 12, 200 square feet of gallery space, your guests will be able to wander the Museum at will. This option is available after hours and can accommodate up to 325 people. Also, included with this rental option is a tour for 20 people.
Deposit, payment and cancellation
- A 25 per cent deposit is required to secure the date
- Full payment is due 14 days prior to the date of the event
- There is no penalty for cancellations four weeks prior to the event date
- 50% of payment or reservation fee is refundable if the reservation is cancelled 14 days or more up to four weeks before the event date.
- No portion of the payment or reservation fee is refundable if reservation is cancelled less than 14 days before the event.
Written evidence in the form of a certificate or certified copy of an insurance policy issued by the insurer shall be
delivered to the Museum two weeks prior to the event, and shall contain an undertaking by the insurer not to cancel or limit the insurance coverage so described except upon 30 days prior written notice served on the Maritime museum.
Catering/Food and Alcohol
Clients are welcome to use a caterer of their choice. If you are looking for a caterer, we can direct you to caterers we have worked with in the past. Caterers should be aware that there are no cooking facilities within the Museum but there is limited access to a prep area with a sink, counter space and refrigerator available. You are also responsible to remove all trash and recycling generated by your event.
It is the sole responsibility of the user to obtain such permits as are required from the City of Victoria and the Provincial Liquor Distribution Branch. The user is responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable laws governing the service and consumption of alcoholic beverages at an event.
Paid parking is located directly behind the Museum in the city’s Yates Street parkade with 24 hour access. There is also street parking available on many streets surrounding the Museum.
