Bird Cage Elevator

The Maritime Museum of BC is home to the oldest operating birdcage elevator in North America. Plans were made to install the elevator in an 1899 renovation by the famous architect, Francis Rattenbury for the use of the second Chief Justice Theodore Davie. Already in ill health with advanced heart disease, Davie sadly passed away before ever getting to ride in it.

Fun Fact: This elevator ranked #2 in National Geographic’s book Journeys of a Lifetime, in the section Top 10 Elevator Rides. It even beat the Empire State Building, which ranked #4. (http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/top-10/elevator-rides/)

Did You Know?  The Maritime Museum of BC was officially opened in 1965 by Governor Georges Vanier.
