Maritime Masterclasses

Maritime Masterclass in the Maritime Museum of British Columbia gallery

Commitment to Access:

  • Designated aides are always admitted for free. Please let us know how we can best support you in the registration booking notes.
  • We partner with service-based organizations and schools to provide free access to our museum for underserved or marginalized communities. Please use our bursary form to let us know more about your needs.
  • The sliding scale pricing model allows folks who would most likely be priced out of something to have the chance to take part in it. It also seeks to address the systemic inequalities of class in our culture.

Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher ticket prices, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility.

Read more about it here to determine where you fit on the scale.

Our Maritime Masterclasses are practical, skills-based classes, meant for those wanting to refresh their knowledge or learn something new.

SUMMER Schedule

Saturday, June 3 The WEird, the WAcky, the Wonderful with Maina Pertolas & Stephanie Chong
Maritime Masterclass, Darn It! Mend It! Use it Forever! workshop. Image of Anya Zanko, instructor.

Environmental educator and professional photographer Maïna Pertolas  (she her) has a talent for explaining things in creative, yet totally relatable ways. She has a gift for engaging young minds and has an unbridled joy for learning. She has worked on, coordinated, and photographed numerous education programs at non-profits in the Lower Mainland and Sea-to-Sky region. In her spare time, you’ll find her reading 1000 books, wandering  with her camera, or curling up with her 2 dogs and cat.

For over 15 years, environmental and land-based educator Stephanie Chong (she/her) has been inspiring minds of all ages to engage their curiosity, exploring their own backyards in a more meaningful way. She has coordinated learning and education opportunities at museums and science centres in Victoria, Vancouver, and the United States. In her spare time, you’ll likely find her wandering around the intertidal zone looking for wiggly creatures.

The WEird, the wacky, the wonderful

family INTERTIDAL EXPLORATION

Who breathes out of their butt? Who has “eyes” on the end of their arms? Learn all this and more during our family marine intertidal exploration.

Join environmental educators Maina Pertolas and Stephanie Chong as we practice being good neighbours to our ocean friends. Get an up-close look at some of the creatures, learn about what makes them special, and discuss how we can keep their homes healthy.

Please note that this is an OUTDOOR program.

Location: Meet in Vic West on the Songhees Walkway (more details provided to registered participants a few days before the event)

Recommended for families

Thanks to support from Ocean Week Canada, this experience is FREE.

Pre-registration required; no walk-ups permitted.

Coastal Conversations

Coastal Conversations invites participants to connect with community facilitators and MMBC staff to build cultural literacy, deeper understanding, and ultimately a more inclusive, welcoming community of diversity. Conversations may touch on sensitive topics including (but not limited to) experiences of those who are unhoused, immigration journeys, queer and trans community experiences, etc. as they relate to the maritime experience.

We are committed to ensuring that all participants experience a welcoming and safe environment in these conversations, regardless of personal background or identity.

Participants can expect:

  • Clear guiding principles and expectations for conversation;
  • Co-facilitators with knowledge/experience in the topic area and training in facilitating conversations.
  • Optional readings and learning opportunities provided in advance of the conversation so participants can join the conversations with some framework to engage in discussions.

Thanks to support from the City of Victoria, this program is free to the public.

Growing up in Victoria, Sarah’s love for the ocean began as a child on the beaches of Qualicum. Her parents claim that it was very difficult to pry her away. As a person with mild cerebral palsy, Sarah has navigated the world of marine biology while sharing the passion with others. Through this she realized her unique ability to perceive the individual strengths and needs of the people she encounters, adjusting her teaching to meet them.

Learning to support diversabilities in outdoor exploration

Getting outside is something many of us take for granted. But have you ever considered who can or cannot access the outdoors easily? Despite the important mental and physical health benefits to spending time outside, obstacles such as stairs, tree roots, uneven terrain, societal expectations (or limitations), and negative self-talk can be significant barriers for those with diverse physical abilities.

On June 1, connect with like-minded people, hear from individuals with different perspectives, and develop a toolkit for how you can make the outdoors more accessible for others.
