Commitment to Access:

  • Designated aides are always admitted for free. Please let us know how we can best support you in the registration booking notes.
  • We partner with service-based organizations and schools to provide free access to our museum for underserved or marginalized communities. Please use our bursary form to let us know more about your needs.
  • The sliding scale pricing model allows folks who would most likely be priced out of something to have the chance to take part in it. It also seeks to address the systemic inequalities of class in our culture.

Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher ticket prices, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility.

Read more about it here to determine where you fit on the scale.

Our Maritime Masterclasses are practical, skills-based classes, meant for those wanting to refresh their knowledge or learn something new.

For over 15 years, environmental and land-based educator Stephanie Chong (she/her) has been inspiring minds of all ages to engage their curiosity, exploring their own backyards in a more meaningful way. She has coordinated learning and education opportunities at museums and science centres in Victoria, Vancouver, and the United States. She believes strongly in encouraging curiosity, a joy of being outdoors, and a communal understanding of environmental responsibility with everyone she works with. In her spare time, you’ll likely find her wandering around the intertidal zone looking for wiggly creatures.

Stephanie is originally from the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (“Vancouver”) and has been fortunate to call the traditional territories of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples her home for just over a year.

Closer, Deeper, More Connected

Marine Intertidal Exploration

How well do you know your neighbourhood? Your neighbours?

Join environmental educator and marine biologist Stephanie Chong as you learn how Victoria’s strong connection to the water gives it unique histories, cultures, and ecosystems that defines its past, current, and future resilience.

Then get an up-close look at some of the creatures that call the intertidal zone their home, discuss how we are connected to the natural world, and re-consider how we interact with the outdoors. Leave feeling empowered with new knowledge about your marine neighbours and how to be a better neighbour yourself.

Please note that this is an OUTDOOR program. Location: Vic West on the Songhees Walkway

Coastal Conversations

nEXT PROGRAM ON tHURSDAY mARCH 30TH @ 6-7:30PM

Coastal Conversations invites participants to connect with community facilitators and MMBC staff to build cultural literacy, deeper understanding, and ultimately a more inclusive, welcoming community of diversity. Conversations may touch on sensitive topics including (but not limited to) experiences of those who are unhoused, immigration journeys, queer and trans community experiences, etc. as they relate to the maritime experience.

We are committed to ensuring that all participants experience a welcoming and safe environment in these conversations, regardless of personal background or identity.

Participants can expect:

  • Clear guiding principles and expectations for conversation;
  • Co-facilitators with knowledge/experience in the topic area and training in facilitating conversations.
  • Optional readings and learning opportunities provided in advance of the conversation so participants can join the conversations with some framework to engage in discussions.

Thanks to support from the City of Victoria, this program is free to the public.

Lucero moved to Vancouver from Mexico City in 2015 to study Biological Sciences, Conservation, and Evolution at Simon Fraser University. She is passionate about climate change, as well as social and environmental justice, which are challenges that can only be solved with the inclusion of local communities. She is currently finding her way back to her roots and indigenous ancestry, including learning her family’s traditional language “Hñahñu” of the Hñahñu or Otomi nation from the Mezquital Valley in Mexico.

Lucero lives on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

Where Land Meets Sea: Navigating our Responsibility when Exploring the Outdoors

As the weather gets nicer, more people will be getting outdoors. But have you ever considered the impacts – both positive and negative – that you have on the places you go? Connect with like-minded people, hear from individuals with different perspectives, and reflect on your relationships with the places you live and visit. Discuss challenges and opportunities with others and leave feeling empowered to seek the information that will make you a better steward for the places you love.

We ask that all participants register so we can provide you with the Community Agreement and optional reading materials in advance.
