Artists Aboard Program at the Classic Boat Festival header

The Maritime Museum of British Columbia is seeking four local artists to participate in its 45th annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival. Selected artists will be contacted to confirm availability and scheduling of their dock time throughout the Festival, and to register via our online events platform.

Timeline for Applicants

January 9, 2024 – call for artists launches
March 11, 2024 – application period closes for Artists Aboard Program at 11:59 PM
April 15, 2024 – selection of artists announced
August 30 – September 1, 2024 – Victoria Classic Boat Festival runs in the Inner Harbour
October 20 – Artists Aboard Artists’ Showcase at the Maritime Museum of BC, 744 Douglas Street

Selected Artists Receive

  • $200 honorarium
  • one scheduled time block on the docks; one scheduled time block aboard SV Dorothy, and one scheduled time block aboard a classic vessel for the Sunday Sail Past
  • two tickets to the Friday night opening reception
  • Artists’ Showcase day and Gala Evening on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at the Maritime Museum of BC gallery at  744 Douglas Street
  • 60/40 consignment rate if you would like to make sales during the Artists’ Showcase

Project Brief

Artists applying for the program must have a stated interest and clear experience in maritime art and/or heritage boats. All forms of visual art are eligible, including painting, sketching, drawing, photography, mixed media, or any combination thereof.

Eligibility

  • Open to all ages; artists under age 18 must have a guardian sign for them.
  • Artists must be residing in Canada

Selection of Artists

We will announce the first cohort of the Artists Aboard Program by April 15, 2024. The Maritime Museum of BC reserves the right to reject portfolios and close the program if submissions do not reflect the project brief. The selection criteria include considering the relevance of each applicant’s portfolio to and interest in maritime art and/or heritage boats. The Artist must be available for their scheduled dock time, and The Artists’ Showcase day and Gala Evening on Sunday, October 20, 2024; the general public will be able to visit your display during the day, and a special evening showcase with invited guests will occur in the evening between 5:00 – 6:30 PM.

Copyright and Non-Exclusive License

Artists retain copyright to both their final works, and all materials created at the Festival. The Artist does not transfer copyright or any automatic licensing or use of their portfolio, final works, or materials by submitting their application. The Artist is required to submit one image of their final work appropriate for marketing the Artist at The Artists’ Showcase and grant a non-exclusive license to the Museum for non-commercial, educational purposes, in formats and settings that include, but are not limited to, print and electronic publications, events and exhibitions, internet websites, classrooms, and online.
