For our Tea & Talks, museum volunteers, archival staff, and educators present unique artifacts from our collection, surrounded by discussions of maritime history and other seaworthy topics – all over a cup of tea and refreshments. With our virtual shift, we’re still providing the talk, but the tea and refreshments will be from the comfort of your own home
Join us for a program LIVE using Zoom Meetings, where they have the chance to interact with volunteer speakers. After purchasing a Live program, you will receive a link to register for the Zoom Meeting. Tickets can be purchased at our Online Store.
THIS WEEK’S TALK: The CANADIAN ARCTIC EXPEDITION: THE KARLUK TRAGEDY’S AWFUL UNAUTHORIZED SEQUEL
For this week’s talk, join Caroline Preston to discuss stories from the Canadian Arctic Expedition. During the Canadian Arctic Expedition (1913-18), the ship Karluk was trapped in the ice and drifted nearly to Wrangel Island off Siberia; 12 out of 25 survived in a harrowing example of heroism, frailty and a flawed leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson. This talk’s focus is his unauthorized “colonization” of Wrangel Island for Canada (1921-23). Out of five (including one token young Canadian), only the Inupiat woman, Ada Blackjack, survived. They were all heroes and their stories should be told.
