SUMMARY:Maritime Masterclasses: A West Coast Trail Preparation Primer
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for your West Coast Trail adventure with experienced hiker\, Chantal Webb! Learn what to pack and what to leave behind\, get insider tips for booking the trail\, and gain essential hiking knowledge\, including trail etiquette\, wildlife safety\, and navigation techniques. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a first-timer\, this primer ensures you’re ready for a successful and unforgettable journey.  \n\n\n\nThis program does not require registration\, but you can register to ensure your spot. It is included in the cost of admission or with a MMBC membership. \n\n\n\nInstructor Chantal Webb has been a runner her entire life. After 28 years\, she decided to offset some of her running with hiking\, to reduce the strain on her joints.  \n\n\n\nBeing the type of person who jumps into everything with both feet\, the first hike she wanted to do was an 8-week\, 1\,000 km section of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). After planning and training for a year and a half\, she hiked for 6 weeks and achieved 700 kilometers.  \n\n\n\nChantal was happy to find that she loved hiking – with the scenery\, challenge and occasional solitude – and learned a lot! She returned to the PCT last year for 3 weeks and 350 kms and will return this year for a month and 500 kms. She hiked the West Coast Trail last summer and really enjoyed the difference in the experience from dry California to muddy Vancouver Island.  \n\n\n\nInstructor Jamie Webb is a third generation Victorian whose grandfather sailed in the famed clipper Thermopylae in the 1890’s. In 1988 Jamie completed a four-year apprenticeship in Rigging and Sailmaking.  \n\n\n\nFor the last 20 years he has worked for the Royal Canadian Navy and is currently their Senior Protocol Officer. Jamie has been a naval reserve officer and instructor with the Sea Cadet programme since 1983.

SUMMARY:Behind-the-Scenes Collection Tour
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what’s behind those Staff Only doors at your favourite museums? Now’s your chance to find out. Join us at the Maritime Museum of BC for a look behind the scenes. Each month\, one of our Collections Tour Guides will lead a small group through a particular aspect of our collection.  \n\n\n\nThis month’s guide is Gene Fedderly with a look at the MMBC’s uniform collection.  \n\n\n\nParticipants should meet in the lobby of 4000 Seymour Place at 1 pm on Friday\, September 27th. The tour will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.  \n\n\n\nTours are limited to six participants and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Guide: \n\n\n\nGene Fedderly was born in 1963 in Edmonton\, Alberta and grew up primarily in nearby Sherwood Park. At 13 he joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and underwent summer training at HMCS QUADRA in Comox.  He joined the Naval Reserve at HMCS NONSUCH in 1980 and in 1981 enrolled in the Regular Officer Training Plan. He graduated from Royal Roads Military College with a BSc in 1985 and completed Maritime Surface officer training at HMCS VENTURE in 1986. Gene then joined his first operational ship\, HMCS TERRA NOVA\, where he achieved his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate\, and after specialty training carried on as her Above Water Warfare Officer. He served in a variety of seagoing and staff positions on the West Coast\, retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy in 2013 with the rank of lieutenant-commander. He transferred to the Cadet Training Organization in 2015 and spent the next five summers as a staff officer at HMCS QUADRA. Gene spent his naval career with a keen interest in tradition and ceremonial\, and commenced volunteering with the Maritime Museum in 2021 on updating the cataloguing of the uniform collection.
