Take inspiration from the maritime scenes of John Horton’s artworks displayed in the gallery\, collage a design from recycled materials\, and turn it into a wearable button! You’ll make a new piece of hardware to show of your creativity and passions\, along with your love of the ocean.  \n\n\n\nMaterials will be provided\, but if you have personal materials such as small photos\, letters\, or other paper material that you would like to incorporate into the collages\, please bring them along. Everyone will leave with one 6cm button to attach to your favourite bag\, tote or coat!  \n\n\n\nAs part of our monthly Community Days\, admission to the museum on May 16th \, as well as participation in this program\, are by donation. Drop in anytime from 10:30am to 3:30pm to make your button. The Museum is open 9:30am to 4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Seaside Chats: Solutions for Ocean Sustainability 
DESCRIPTION:Join us on World Water Day to learn more about what is happening in our community to conserve our ocean ecosystems and find solutions in the face of climate change. Hear from two speakers featured in our current exhibit\, Pacific in Peril\, as they discuss their work at Ocean Networks Canada and SeaChange. Understand the work that is currently being done\, ask questions\, and learn what you can do to support our oceans.   \n\n\n\n\nJustin Lisaingo is the Operations Manager of Seachange Marine Conservation Society. He is especially keen to explore how multidisciplinary sciences and cultural knowledge can collaboratively benefit coastal and ocean ecosystem management  \n\n\n\nHe has worked extensively in the marine public aquarium industry\, where he specialized in marine species identification and equipment and logistics management. He can usually be found in the forest examining mushrooms and leafhoppers\, while doing archery. He is also highly food-motivated and would argue that marine biology is the most delicious of the sciences.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMartin Scherwath is a Senior Staff Scientist at Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) responsible for geophysical experiments in the fields of gas hydrates\, seabed dynamics\, and geological carbon storage. Martin holds an M.Sc. from Leeds University and a Ph.D. in geophysics from Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. He joined ONC in 2011 and was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria.  \n\n\n\n\nIn celebration of World Water Day\, the Maritime Museum of BC will be open by donation from 9:30am to 4:30pm. DESCRIPTION:A riveting and highly researched naval history of a famous Canadian steamship\, the Empress of Asia\, and the personalities and world events intersecting its history–presented right here in Victoria at the Maritime Museum of BC! \n\n\n\nAuthor Daniel Robert Black will launch Oceans of Fate: Peace and Peril Aboard the Steamship Empress of Asia (Dundurn Press) on March 14\, 2025 in the MMBC gallery at 744 Douglas Street. This launch is included in admission\, and free for MMBC members. \n\n\n\nA Q&A and book signing will follow the presentation. Copies of Oceans of Fate will be available for purchase in the MMBC gift shop. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nThe remarkable story of how one ship — doomed by war — intersected lives and crossed into history. \n\n\n\nCompleted in 1913 for Canadian Pacific\, the Empress of Asia plied the oceans for nearly 30 years. Built for long-haul ocean travel during peace-time\, she saw wartime service as an armed merchant cruiser and troopship before Japanese dive-bombers destroyed her in 1942. \n\n\n\nThrough the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression\, she brought continents and people together\, delivering mail and multimillion-dollar consignments of silk. As a luxurious passenger liner\, she was a “Greyhound of the Pacific\,” braving epic storms and smashing transpacific speed records. From stokehold to bridge\, steerage to first-class staterooms\, she steamed with a kaleidoscope of lives\, including courageous and recalcitrant crew\, immigrants and refugees seeking a better life or relief from disaster\, drug smugglers\, weapons dealers\, and the idle and not-so-idle rich. \n\n\n\nThis is the dramatic story of how that one ship and the lives of those on board intersected during a tumultuous period of world history\, culminating in her sinking off Singapore in the Second World War. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nDan Black is the former editor of Legion Magazine and author or co-author of three previous books\, including Harry Livingstone’s Forgotten Men: Canadians and the Chinese Labour Corps in the First World War. DESCRIPTION:After a brilliant weekend on the docks during the 45th annual Classic Boat Festival\, four local artists have been working on their interpretations of docks\, boats\, and sea! \n\n\n\nJoin us in the gallery to see artists’ works from the Festival. Image courtesy of Christina Morrison. \n\n\n\nFeatured artists: \n\n\n\nLiz Charsley\n\n\n\n\n\nI’ve always been interested in boats and boating. I learned to sail at RVYC at age 12\, and kept a small sailboat there for a couple of years. I’m fortunate to have friends who are involved in the Classic Boat Show and have visited their boats at the show many times over the years.  \n\n\n\nWhen I did my MA in Drawing at Camberwell College of Art\, London\, my subject was the Thames. I took my inflatable kayak onto the upper reaches of the river and photographed some of the boats and boatyards from my kayak\, to get a water-borne perspective. I made a number of drawings of these boats in graphite\, enjoying their muscular practical shapes\, the ropes and rigging\, and their reflections in the water.   \n\n\n\nI moved on to make a series of charcoal drawings of the surface of the river waters\,  and the wild riverside verges.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRichard Linzey\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrowing up in Kent\, England\, coastal archaeology and maritime heritage are inescapable; they become part of your DNA. A life-long interest in naval and military history became a career; first as an architect with English Heritage and\, latterly in Canada\, as a heritage planner and building conservator. These days\, I enjoy painting maritime scenes in acrylic and have a growing portfolio of maritime heritage-related subjects.  \n\n\n\n\n\nJanet Moore\n\n\n\n\n\nI am a plein air artist working in oils and I paint on location twice a week with two plein air groups on and around the Victoria area. Although I am inspired by our landscape I am most drawn to the beautiful lines and shapes of a variety of boats. Whether they be classic sailboats\, tugboats\, fishing trollers and even freighters\, if there is a boat of any description in sight it will surely be the focal point of my painting. With the use of colour\, texture and interesting mark making\, my hope is that the vessel in my painting tells a story to the viewer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nINSTAGRAM\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristina Morrison\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is my goal to paint all the tugboats on the West Coast of BC. I came up with the idea 3 years ago. I wanted to raise awareness of the importance and significance of our Nautical History\, as I hoped\, in some way\, this project would do. And it has. I have been totally overwhelmed at the response i have gotten. There are over 550 tugboats working on our coast right now. I have also included many heritage boats. I have completed 80 paintings so far. This project is a collaboration of the many mariners and tugboat photographers who submit their photos for me to use with their permission. It is my dream to one day put a book together with the photos/paintings and stories from all the mariners and marine photographers of BC.

SUMMARY:Nautical Nights: The Coffin Ship: Superstition and Incompetence in the S.S. Clallam Tragedy
DESCRIPTION:One-hundred-and-twenty years after one of the worst maritime disasters in the Pacific Northwest\, historian Erik Kosick joins our Nautical Nights Speaker Series to delve into the history of The Coffin Ship: Superstition and Incompetence in the S.S. Clallam Tragedy. \n\n\n\nIn January 1904\, the 6-month-old steamer Clallam foundered in the Strait on Juan de Fuca\, with the loss of at least 54 lives\, the worst maritime disaster in the Pacific Northwest since the wreck of the Pacific in 1875. Struggling in a gale\, the steamer had fallen into distress only three miles from Victoria’s harbour\, well within sight of onlookers ashore. Launched in fear of an immediate sinking\, her lifeboats became deathtraps in the Strait\, drowning all that entered them. The steamer remained afloat for several more hours. When the Clallam finally slid below the waves of the Strait\, only fourteen of her passengers survived; every woman and child was lost\, while nearly all the crew survived. Victoria was hit particularly hard by the tragedy\, as many of the victims came from the city. Rumblings of ill omens surrounded Clallam’s launch and final voyage and was posthumously labeled as the ‘Hoodoo Ship’. \n\n\n\nDespite unbroken champagne bottles and nervous bellwether sheep\, the causes of Clallam’s wreck were not supernatural. In fact\, she had been well-liked by the traveling public and had passed all inspections. As Canadian and American investigations in the wreck revealed a culture of incompetence and corruption inside the steamboat industry\, grief turned to anger in an explosive scandal that sowed Canadian wariness of American steamships. On the American side\, the inquiries were a source of local and national contention; the Clallam would be an ignored warning for worse maritime disasters soon to come. 120 years after the tragedy\, through rarely seen photographs and objects\, writer and historian Erik Kosick will take you aboard the final voyage of the Clallam\, exploring the stories of her passengers and crew\, and how this almost forgotten shipwreck drastically altered the course of the maritime industry in the Salish Sea. \n\n\n\nThe Speaker – Erik Kosick\n\n\n\nErik Kosick graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Pacific Lutheran University in 2016\, and currently works for the Washington State Historical Society in Tacoma. Erik has a strong interest in Pacific Northwest history\, particularly in maritime history. In 2020\, he consulted and donated artifacts for the Society’s exhibit Unforgiving Waters: Shipwrecks of the Pacific Northwest. Erik was a historical consultant and presenter for the 2023 documentary Death is With Me\, on the 1937 ‘Lady of the Lake’ murder case at Lake Crescent\, Washington. \n\n\n\nHe also writes for the Washington State Historical Society’s magazine COLUMBIA under the feature Maps and Legends. The Clallam disaster is a fascination of his and has been researching the shipwreck since 2009. He also presented a lecture on the shipwreck for the Pacific Northwest History Conference in October 2020 and a corresponding feature article for COLUMBIA. He is also nearing completion of a book concerning the tragedy.

DESCRIPTION:From fishing boats to ferries\, a diverse group of mariners share their tales of lives on the water off northern Vancouver Island. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker – Suzanne Jolly\, Director and Producer\n\n\n\nSuzanne Jolly crafts stories as a means of exploring the world and creating connection. With a graduate degree in Education and a Bachelors in Communications\, she has spent the last two decades as a professional writer\, instructor\, multimedia strategist\, and administrator in higher education. She has a love of people and their fantastic tales\, as well as dogs and their wagging tails. If you find her not chatting with someone or teaching yoga\, you’ll likely not be able to find her at all: she’s often riding on her adventure motorbike in the backcountry or paddling with her husband in their ocean kayaks. She loves being on the ocean and is the stepdaughter of a tugboat captain. She lives in Campbell River\, BC where she met many who work on the water\, as she previously ran marine safety training at North Island College.
