SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Captain Scott's Scrapbook with Margot Dixon
DESCRIPTION:An intriguing family album is entering the Maritime Museum of BC Collection. We invite you to join Margot Dixon in the gallery when she visits to drop off Captain Scott’s scrapbook; she’ll be sharing details of her research\, and you’ll have a chance to view the scrapbook with her. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nAmongst the family albums her mother had kept\, Margot Dixon found something very curious—Captain Samuel F. Scott’s old scrapbook. Who was this man? And why did her family have his scrapbook? As she read through the book\, full of one-of-a-kind documents\, she soon realized this intriguing scrapbook was much more than a family curiosity. \n\n\n\nFrom the items within the scrapbook and Margot’s own research\, a fascinating story emerged\, one of a life on the high seas in the late nineteenth century\, sailing across some of the most dangerous waters\, facing storms\, shipwrecks\, illness\, war\, mutiny\, and tragedy.  \n\n\n\nBorn in New Brunswick\, Captain Scott\, along with his family\, sailed across the world for various shipping companies. While sailing from England to India\, his wife and two of his children tragically died. Returning to Canada\, he remarried and\, with his family in tow\, sailed three times across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. But\, after years at sea and another tragedy\, Captain Scott turned to gold mining in British Columbia\, then explored business opportunities along the west coast of Canada and the United States before his untimely death. \n\n\n\nBased on the documents in Captain Scott’s original scrapbook\, collected during his lifetime\, 1847–1905\, and then transcribed by Margot\, Captain Scott’s Scrapbook provides an intimate account of one of Canada’s most remarkable post-confederate shipmasters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck out the book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nAs a historian and archivist\, Margot Dixon maintained the archives for The Bank of Nova Scotia and researched social history for interpretive manuals\, including family histories\, for Upper Canada Village using primary source documents. She has presented at conferences for Living History Museums and the Costume Society of Canada as well as published articles in their journals and magazines.

SUMMARY:Argonaut II Tours
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This tour takes place aboard a vessel that will be moored at Ship Point in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. View the product photos for specifics of where to find Argonaut II on the day of your tour! \n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalk the decks of a true Pacific Northwest icon! Built in Vancouver in 1922\, the 73-foot wooden vessel Argonaut II has spent over a century on our waters. Originally launched as the corporate yacht Greta M\, she was acquired by the United Church of Canada in 1934 and rechristened the Thomas Crosby IV. For over 30 years\, she served as a crucial lifeline to more than 50 remote Northern BC ports of call\, visiting isolated lighthouses\, canneries\, logging camps\, and First Nations villages. During this era\, she was skippered by the renowned Haida leader Rev. Dr. Peter Kelly\, the first Indigenous person ordained in the United Church of Canada. \n\n\n\nBelow deck\, Argonaut II remains remarkably preserved in her mission-boat era configuration. Step inside to see the stained glass salon cabinets\, classic aft and forward staterooms\, and her historic 1939 air-start 6-cylinder Gardner engine. Offered in collaboration with the Maritime Museum of BC\, these guided tours offer a look inside a vessel undergoing an active\, community-funded restoration under owner Nicholas Verrochi. \n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\n\n\n\nDates: Friday\, October 23 & Saturday\, October 24\, 2026\n\n\n\nTour Hours: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM daily (Lunch break 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM)\n\n\n\nCapacity: Limited to 15 guests per tour slot\n\n\n\nLocation: Greater Victoria Harbour Authority Docks\, Inner Harbour\n\n\n\n\nBonus: Every ticket directly supports the restoration of Argonaut II and public programming at the Maritime Museum of BC\, and includes free admission to the museum! These tours are made possible by the generous support of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA note about our tiered pricing: \n\n\n\nWe believe in making our collection accessible to as many people as possible\, which is why we are offering a tiered pricing system. This approach allows you to choose a price that fits your current financial situation\, ensuring that everyone can participate. \n\n\n\nSupporter Price: $25This tier is for those who can afford a little more. By choosing this price\, you are helping to support others who may not have the same financial flexibility. Your generosity allows us to maintain a diverse and inclusive community. \n\n\n\nStandard Price: $20This is the standard price that reflects the fair market value of this tour.
