Here from our Collection are two beautiful knot work purses, which are potentially ditty bags. Both objects were donated by J.H. McEvoy, likely in the 1970s.

A ditty bag is a small bag used to hold small tools, toiletries and other personal items. Similar to a housewife, which instead holds thread, needles, tape, and other sewing supplies for sailors.

This beautiful cream cotton macramé showcases an art that sailors have been practitioners of for centuries! On board the ship, knotwork is used as a form of recreation to pass away the long hours at sea.

When the drawstring of this cylindrical purse is pulled, the closure is decorated with these red finger-shaped tabs made of synthetic fabric. Inside, the purse is made of cardboard. The outside bottom of the purse is covered with quilted red synthetic fabric.
