SUMMARY:Seaside Chats: Solutions for Ocean Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Join us on World Water Day to learn more about what is happening in our community to conserve our ocean ecosystems and find solutions in the face of climate change. Hear from two speakers featured in our current exhibit\, Pacific in Peril\, as they discuss their work at Ocean Networks Canada and SeaChange. Understand the work that is currently being done\, ask questions\, and learn what you can do to support our oceans.   \n\n\n\n\nJustin Lisaingo is the Operations Manager of Seachange Marine Conservation Society. He is especially keen to explore how multidisciplinary sciences and cultural knowledge can collaboratively benefit coastal and ocean ecosystem management  \n\n\n\nHe has worked extensively in the marine public aquarium industry\, where he specialized in marine species identification and equipment and logistics management. He can usually be found in the forest examining mushrooms and leafhoppers\, while doing archery. He is also highly food-motivated and would argue that marine biology is the most delicious of the sciences.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMartin Scherwath is a Senior Staff Scientist at Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) responsible for geophysical experiments in the fields of gas hydrates\, seabed dynamics\, and geological carbon storage. Martin holds an M.Sc. from Leeds University and a Ph.D. in geophysics from Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. He joined ONC in 2011 and was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria.  \n\n\n\n\nIn celebration of World Water Day\, the Maritime Museum of BC will be open by donation from 9:30am to 4:30pm. By registering for this event\, you can enjoy the Museum any time before or after Seaside Chats. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is optional but strongly encouraged.   \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Love Across the Waves: A Valentine’s Day Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:This Valentine’s Day\, join us at the Maritime Museum of BC for a heartwarming family-friendly event filled with creativity and maritime history! Drop in anytime from 10:30am to 3:30pm to create a unique Valentine’s Day card for your loved ones\, inspired by the age-old tradition of sailors sending love letters across the sea.  \n\n\n\nExplore the art of stamping and printing as you use pre-made stamps or create your very own linocut stamps to design personalized cards. Imagine the joy of sending a heartfelt message across the ocean—just like sailors did when they wrote letters to their sweethearts back home. Take home a special card to send your love or give it to someone who means the most to you.  \n\n\n\nCome for the art\, stay for the stories of love that sailed the seas\, and make this Valentine’s Day one to remember for the whole family!  \n\n\n\nTo spread the love\, admission to the museum as well as participation in this program are by donation on February 14th 2025 as part of our monthly community days. The museum is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Pacific in Peril: Climate Change\, the Warming Ocean\, and How to Turn the Tide
DESCRIPTION:To live on the coast is to be influenced by the ocean every day. Many make their living on the water. It is a source of food\, and a way of transporting people and goods. It drives changes to our weather. So\, what happens when climate change starts to affect a body of water as large as the Pacific Ocean?   \n\n\n\nClimate change isn’t only warming the ocean. It’s also leading to acidification\, causing coastal erosion\, raising sea levels\, and expanding areas of deoxygenation. The results are rippling through the entire ecosystem.   \n\n\n\nWhile we don’t always see it\, the ocean plays a key role in carbon sequestration and could be our greatest ally in the fight against climate change. Efforts have already started to boost the power of the Pacific.   \n\n\n\nIf you love the ocean as much as we do\, join us at the Maritime Museum of BC as we explore what climate change could mean for the Pacific and what we can do to help protect it now and for future generations.

SUMMARY:Behind-the-Scenes Collection Tour
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what’s behind those Staff Only doors at your favourite museums? Now’s your chance to find out. Join us at the Maritime Museum of BC for a look behind the scenes. Each month\, one of our Collections Tour Guides will lead a small group through a particular aspect of our collection.  \n\n\n\nThis month’s guide is Gene Fedderly with a look at the MMBC’s uniform collection.  \n\n\n\nParticipants should meet in the lobby of 4000 Seymour Place at 1 pm on Friday\, September 27th. The tour will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.  \n\n\n\nTours are limited to six participants and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Guide: \n\n\n\nGene Fedderly was born in 1963 in Edmonton\, Alberta and grew up primarily in nearby Sherwood Park. At 13 he joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and underwent summer training at HMCS QUADRA in Comox.  He joined the Naval Reserve at HMCS NONSUCH in 1980 and in 1981 enrolled in the Regular Officer Training Plan. He graduated from Royal Roads Military College with a BSc in 1985 and completed Maritime Surface officer training at HMCS VENTURE in 1986. Gene then joined his first operational ship\, HMCS TERRA NOVA\, where he achieved his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate\, and after specialty training carried on as her Above Water Warfare Officer. He served in a variety of seagoing and staff positions on the West Coast\, retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy in 2013 with the rank of lieutenant-commander. He transferred to the Cadet Training Organization in 2015 and spent the next five summers as a staff officer at HMCS QUADRA. Gene spent his naval career with a keen interest in tradition and ceremonial\, and commenced volunteering with the Maritime Museum in 2021 on updating the cataloguing of the uniform collection.

SUMMARY:Maritime Masterclasses: The Weird\, the Wacky\, the Wonderful: Family Intertidal Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Who breathes out of their butt? Who has “eyes” on the end of their arms? Learn all this and more during our family marine intertidal exploration! \n\n\n\nJoin environmental educator Stephanie Chong as we get an up-close look at our marine neighbours. Consider the complex balance between non-living and living (including humans!) in healthy ecosystems and discuss how we\, as a community\, can make positive and impactful choices in our everyday lives.  \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. This is an outdoor program. \n\n\n\nInstructor: Stephanie Chong \n\n\n\nFor over 15 years\, environmental educator Stephanie Chong (she/her) has coordinated learning and education opportunities at museums and science centres in Canada and the United States. She believes strongly in encouraging curiosity\, a joy of being outdoors\, and a communal understanding of environmental responsibility with everyone she works with. In her spare time\, you’ll likely find her wandering around the intertidal zone looking for wiggly creatures. Stephanie is originally from the traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (“Vancouver”) and has been fortunate to call the traditional territories of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples her home for the past two years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister HEre!
