Wendy Moreton, Director of the Board at the Maritime Museum of BC

Wendy Moreton Takes on Role of President

I am originally from Vancouver, but have called Victoria home since 1996. My educational background includes diplomas in Marketing (BCIT 1980), Interior Design (Pacific Design Academy 1997) and I have held a license in Residential Real Estate from the Sauder School of Business since 2000. I worked in the wholesale grocery industry and was a partner in a cabinet manufacturing company while in Vancouver, and I have worked as a residential realtor for the past 21 years in Victoria. I have an extensive background in volunteering and with non-profit entities, including 14 years with the Victoria Real Estate Board, with 6 years on the board as a director and officer. I had leadership, governance and media training during that time, and chaired various committees, including Community Relations, Professional Standards and Professional Development. I also worked more than 10 years on the organizing committee for the Victoria Classic Boat Festival. I was a member of the group that formed a society to carry on when the VREB and Black Press sponsorship ended, and I wore many hats during my time on the festival committee and society board. I am currently serving on the board of the Victoria Jazz Society, and volunteering with Victoria Hospice.

Lisa Makar Takes on Role of Vice-President

Lisa is Managing Partner and Chief Operating Officer of Elevate Consulting. With over 15 years of business management consulting experience, she has provided support and guidance to private and public sector organizations in a broad range of sectors, including transportation, healthcare, natural resources and the social sector. Her primary areas of expertise are strategy and planning, organizational growth and transformation, and governance. A strong believer in giving back to her community, Lisa is passionate about bringing her skills and experiences to a variety of not-for-profits, including the Maritime Museum. Most recently, she also served as a Director for the Robert Bateman Foundation.

Prior to her career in consulting Lisa spent the earlier half of her career in tourism and hospitality. She owned and operated Cassis Bistro in the Cook Street Village and still remains a “foodie” at heart. She was Director of Rooms at the Fairmont Empress and General Manager of the Sidney Pier Hotel and Spa. Tourism continues to be a passion for Lisa, which is one of the drivers for her interest in volunteering on the Board of MMBC. She sees the museum as an integral component of Victoria’s value as a destination in addition to connecting people with our expansive maritime history.

Lisa has called Victoria home since 1994 having made the pilgrimage from Alberta to be closer to the ocean. Avidly practicing “cold water emersion” she has a number of favourite spots around her home where she can take a plunge! She also loves to kayak and paddleboard. Lisa lives in Sidney with her two teenage sons.
