The Maritime Museum of BC welcomed the Classic Boat Festival Artists Aboard cohort to show the drawings and paintings they spent their Festival weekend sketching and creating.

The 2024 Artists Aboard are: Liz Charsley, Richard Linzey, Janet Moore, and Christina Morrison.

Thank you to everyone who attended the public showcase on Sunday of the Festival works of these wonderful local artists.

At an evening party to celebrate the occasion, we were delighted to hear from each artist how they were inspired by their experiences at the Classic Boat Festival, and their approach to interpreting what they saw into fine art drawings and paintings.

We were delighted to welcome keynote John Horton, noted marine artist and Order of British Columbia recipient. He spoke of his own mentors and inspiration over his long career, and about the discipline and attention to detail that defines marine art. He offered great advice to emerging artists about understanding the “anatomy” of a vessel and how it moves in water.

Longtime Classic Boat Festival supporter with Delta Lifeboat, Keynote John Horton showed his wonderful “Arrival Off Victoria” painting and spoke about the purpose and passion of marine artists.

Christina Morrison talked about her ongoing Tugboat Project–95 out of 575 identified tugs painted and counting!–and showed a wonderful painting of Messenger III.

Art and classic vessels were a perfect pairing at the 45th annual Classic Boat Festival, and seeing vessels and moments on the docks captured forever in fine art drawings and paintings was a wonderful Sunday afternoon in Victoria for art and boat lovers.

Liz Charsley showed her delicate drawings, featuring precise lines of vessels and beautifully rendered ripples and reflections.

Janet Moore displayed wonderful plein air oil paintings featuring historic vessels CA Kirkegaard and steamboat Dodo and spoke about her commitment to the art of plein air painting twice per week.

Richard Linzey presented beautiful acrylic paintings in stunning colours with scenes from the docks. His careers in heritage planning and architecture inform his eye for heritage vessels.
