We are delighted to announce that our 2024 Abernethy & Gaudin Boatbuilders Ltd. Young Boaters Scholarship recipient is Pete Reid, with Pago Pago.

“In 2022, Pago Pago was hauled at Jack’s boatyard, where a close to full rebuild was done, headed by shipwright Trevor Webster (restoration of the year for his boat “Cresset” in 201?), using the same resourcefulness, and ingenuity demonstrated by Bill Healy. Boat was stripped, rotten strip planks replaced, re-sheathed, and the glassed. A dodger and combings were added. Integral fuel tanks added. Much of the hardware, rig, spars, and ballast etc, was scavenged from over 25 derelicts around Jacks Boatyard, and local beaches then repurposed into a fine sailing yacht. The interior was refurbished and is about 50% original. The list goes on….

Pago Pago, in my opinion, is a testament to the creativity, resourcefulness, and diligence that is essential for young boat builders working on a budget, and represents the DIY ethos and spirit of Jack’s boatyard.

This scholarship would be the perfect culmination, and opportunity to show, and receive feedback after a significant rebuild. This boat was on the brink of destruction, and every effort has been made to give it a new life. It would be great for me to reconnect with the community after 2 years of having my head in the bilge, living in a rusty old van in a dirty boatyard. I have dedicated 100% of my non working time (and $$$) over the past 2 years to the restoration, and it would be great to have a venue to show other young folks what can be done with determination and tenacity.

I am incredibly proud of the work we have done, and would love to share it.”
